CASHMERE WATER SUPPLY

HOUSES TO BE TAKEN OFF OVERTAXED MAIN

Residents in Cashmere who are using unattended hoses and sprinklers on their gardens, in some cases throughout the night, are depriving some houses of their domestic water supply. In the last few weeks water pressure has been lost in some parts and last Saturday there was, no water at all for some. ' The Heathcote County Council, which administers the area, has prohibited the use of unattended hoses and sprinklers temporarily, while it makes alterations to the water supply. Loss of water pressure was noticed by consumers connected to the Dyers Pass road main last year. The reason was considerable new housing development in a small area about Cracroft terrace, at the foot of the hills. To serve this new area adequately the council has decided to take it off the Dyers Pass road main and put it on to the Colombo street main. Alterations cannot be completed unt the tram tracks are lifted, but it . expected that the change will* be made by the end of this month. The clerk of Heathcote County (Mr R. W. Morris) emphasised yesterday that there was no lack of water; it was just that a main was overtaxed. . “In the meantime, if people would refrain from using unattended hoses and sprinklers it would assist other residents and ensure an adequate supply for the affected area,** he said.
