ROAD SAFETY COUNCIL

NO MEETING CALLED IN CHRISTCHURCH

REPORT TO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce will write to the Christchurch City Council inquiring about its plans for a district road safety council. This was decided last evening by the council of the chamber, on the reecommendation of the chamber’s representative on the safety council (Mr J. J. B. Connor). Mr Connor said that no action had ben taken in Christchurch for nearly three months. “I have to report that no meeting of the district road safety council nas yet been called in Christchurch/’ said Mr Connor. “No doubt the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, MB.) is new busy with the election campaign, and it would bd unreasonable to exbect him to give the matter any attention at this juncture. “Nevertheless, it will be three months next week since a public meeting convened by the City Council decided to set up this committee. The delay in acting upon that decision i in unfavourable contrast to the activ: ties of other centres, in many of which road safety committees began operations about three months ago, when Christchurch was still merely considering the project. ' "It would be most regrettable if tills delay gave the country the impression that Christchurch is indifferent or lukewarm about road safety.” said Mr “One of the greatest accident peaks of the year occurs during the summer holidays, and it now seems impossible that any effective action can be taken before the summer,’’ he said. Even if the committee meets before Christmas, it would take time for it to formulate a plan of action."
