ATHLETICS Good Performances In Secondary School Sports

The Christchurch secondary schools sports, held at T-ancaster Park yesterday, provided some of the best performances and keenest finishes since they were established as one of the mam amateur athletic fixtures of the season 32 years ago. Records are made to be broken, and it was hard luck for several performers yesterday that a south-west wind which blew with varying velocity ruled out several performances which under any conditions were well above average. In the first event on the programme, the long jump for intermediates, G. J. Kitchen (Christchurch Boys’ High School) covered 20ft Bin, which was better than the 20ft 7in record made in 1944 by D. Dephoff, in later years an Empire Games representative. The wind at the time the jump was made ruled out the possibility of a record being allowed. In the 100 yards junior race D. Ford, an especially fine young runner from Christ’s College, did 10 4-ssec, onefifth of a second better than the Usee reebrd for this race which is jointly held by four other sprinters. It was established in 1922 by T. H. Lee. Over the same distance in the intermediate class, D. J. Davison (St. Andrew’s College) did 10 3-Bsec, but because of the wind his name cannot be coupled with that of J. Coates (Christchurch West High School), who made this figure in 1948.

In the 120 yards hurdles A. J. Park (Christ’s College) equalled the previous best of 15 2-ssec after a finished display, but again the wind was against the record being granted. Relay Record Lowered

However, the St. Andrew’s College intermediate relay team created new figures when it recorded 46 2-ssec for the 440yds, replacing the previous record of 46 4-ssec made t z St. Bede’s College in 1951 and repeated in 1952. M. Lee (St. Bede’s College), and J. Davison (St. Andrew’s College) had a battle royal in the intermediate sprints, and to win the 220yds Lee was forced to do 23sec, a second better than the Brevious best. In the 100yds, however, lavison turned the tables and won as narrowly as Lee had done in the earlier race. Both are young sprinters of outstanding ability. In the open high jump the record of sft Bin was equalled. The ground, which had been subjected to very rough treatment during the football season, was in surprisingly good order, although there were bare patches on which the going appeared to be loose and shifty. In the circumstances full credit must be given to the young athletes and their coaches for the. very fine performances registered. Christ’s College athletes took the honours of the day by winning the senior championship with 21 points, from St. Bede’s College 13 points, and Christchurch Boys’ High School 111 points. Christ’s College also won the junior championship with 12J points against 7| points by Christchurch West High School and 5| points by Papanui Technical College. In the intermediate division St. Bede’s College scored 14 points to win from St. Andrew’s College 9 points and Christchurch Boys’ High School 8J points. A good start in this competition was made by Linwood High School, which produced the winner of the junior high

jump in R. Dale, who cleared 4ft Ilin, to beat four dead-heaters for second place. The following abbreviations are used In the detailed results:—B.HJs. (Christchurch Boys’ High School), C. C. SOUTH PACIFIC MEETING

AUCKLAND PROPOSAL SUPPORTED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 3. A letter from, the Otago Centre supporting Auckland’s proposal for a South Pacific track and field championship meeting on the lines of the Empire Games was received at a meeting last night of the executive committee of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The letter said that the Ctago Centre “feels the first South. Pacific meeting should be held in New Zealand and wishes to ask that the first meeting be held in Dunedin in 1955 or 1957.” The chairman (Mr H. I. Austad) said there would be a great deal of expense attached to such a meeting. “If such a meeting could be successfully run without undue cost to the countries concerned it would be a very good thing,” he added. Members of the committee said that they expected Fiji and Malaya would be included. After a brief discussion, the association decided to study the proposal more closely at the annual meeting. The Australian miler, John Landy, will not come to New Zealand next year. Advice to that effect was received by the meeting from the Amateur Athletic Union of Australia.
