Ceull Somerville’s Year.—Hie surplus earned by Coulls, Somerville and Wilkie, Ltd., Dunedin, in the year to June 30, after reservation far taxation, was £20,155. To this is added last year’s carry-forward of £31,095 (£37,219), ••trtinsfer of £9413 from depreciation reserve and transfer of £12,600 from replacement reserve, making £73,163 (£41,384). From this balance it was decided to write-off special-depreciation of £19,146 'which, after allowing for the taxation saving, required the same amount as was transferred from the depreciation
reserve, namely £9413. The preference dividend paid in June required £1230. The directors recommend the following dividends: 7 per cent, on the 75,673 new issue shares, which will require £4303, and 7 per cent., on the remaining 124,327 ordinary shares, requiring £8703. This will leave a carry-forward of £49,494.—(P.A.) STERLING REDUCED AGAIN The return of the Reserve Bank for the week ended October 27 discloses a further decline of £3,241,000 to £62,456,000 in the holdings of sterling exchange. Other changes in the bank’s latest return are an increase In trading banks’ deposits to £66,124,000—£64,405,000 tne previous week—after the fourth successive weekly decline. The note issue at £69,169,000 is an increase on the previous week’s figure of £68,638,000.
