BOWLS
CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENS SEASON * The Christchurch Bowling Centre held, for the first time on Saturday, an official opening. This innovation was introduced so that the centre president (Mr G. Macdonald) could meet as many club presidents as possible before the season got under way. In the past it has been a formidable task for the president to get round all greens pn their opening days. The opening of the season was held at the home green of the president (Elmwood), and all presidents of affiliated clubs and their wives were present. Mr T. M. Charters (president of the Elmwood Club) welcomed the centre officials and visitors.
The Deputy-Mayor (Mr G. Manning) spoke on behalf of the City Council and wished all present a successful season in their respective clubs. He referred to the great friendships that were made on the bowling greens. Among those present were two past presidents of the New Zealand Bowling Council, Messrs J. R. Smith and R. H. Taylor. Associated with Mr Macdonald in officially opening the season were the senior vice-president, Mr R. B. Clarke (United! and the junior vice-president, Mr G. Dunn (Kaiapoi). The first bowl of the season was rolled by Mrs Macdonald, wife of the president. During the afternoon the opportunity was taken by the centre of showing its appreciation for the valued services given by Mr H. Killner. who has retired from the position of auditor, which he held for 43 years. Mr R. W. Featherston, the centre’s treasurer, presented Mr Killner with a wristlet watch on behalf of the centre.
LYTTELTON CLUB OPENS SEASON
The Lyttelton Bowling Club opened its thirty-ninth season on Saturday afternoon. The president (Mr J. Voyce) welcomed members and visitors. Mr Voyce specially welcomed Mr W. T. Lester, 0.8. E., a foundation member of the club. The season was declared open by the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr F. G. Briggs). Miss Elizabeth Pascoe sent down the kitty, and Mrs Voyce rolled the first bowl. Mr Briggs presented trophies won last season as follows:—Singles: J. Gilder; pairs, D. McDougall and S. Wales; fours, J. Taylor, J. Preston, J. Voyce, and R. Sinclair. LINWOOD CLUB The following were the winners of the Linwood Bowling Club’s indoor bowls competitions:— Singles. A. Ward; pairs, A. McConnell and F. D. Lanyon (skip); fours, L. Sanders, F. Harris, G. R. Stribling, and R. T. Kellaway (skip).
