FRANK GROSE SHIELD
I. DAWSON WINS TROPHY The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association held its annual 50-mile Frank Grose Memorial Shield race on Saturday. A large field faced the starter, and the race was a triumph for W. Fraser, an Englishman, who was having his first ride in this country, having previously been a member of the De Laurie Cycling Club, South London. Fraser nearly lost first place in that he missed the turn off the Main North road into Tuttons road and had to brake suddenly. He got back on the right road and only just managed to get home before the 13-minute men. Another feature of Fraser’s ride was that after 12 miles he cleared out from his bunch and rode the rest of the way alone. The 13-minute men rode well throughout the race, and four of them were close up at the finish. Dawson moved the break bunch along and with the help of M. Combe and L. Locke these three managed to gain time on the scratch men. In the sprint for the line and time honours Dawson just shaded Combe to take the time, with Lock finishing two seconds later. S. Taylor and R. Fowler, off the sera :h mark, were beaten out of time by nearly a minute. Abbreviations used in the resutls are: Avon (A.), Papanui (P.), South Malvern (S.M.). Results:— W. Fraser (A.)
