TE AROHA CLUB

DOUBLE DIVIDEND OF £791 (New Zealand Press Association) • ■ TE AROHA, October 3. The weather was dull and overcast for the Te Aroha Jockey Club's spring meeting, and light rain fell before the Herriesvilie Hurdles. The track was in good condition, but was-cutting out slightly. The main event, the Ralph Somers Memorial Cup, was won by a veteran handicap horse, Silverdine, which is raced by his Pukekohe owners, Messrs V. and R. Girdhar. Silverdine was never further back than about fifth, and when the field had straightened up for the run to the post Silverdine shot through in the centre of the track and successfully held off a late challenge from Command Performer. The favourite, Ocean Spray 11, weakened over the last furlong, and narrowly beat Lyndomar in a photo-finish for third place. The winner was ridden by M. R. Bender, a 16-year-old Ellerslie apprentice, who gained his first success on £>tanlen at Thames a fortnight ago. There Was a very large attendance, and the totalisator turnover was £236,349 15s, against £197,999 10s for the corresponding meeting last year. The on-course figures were £109,800 10s, including £14,943 10s in doubles. The winning double, Silverdine—Gulliver, paid £791 6s fdr £l. A. O.
