RACING GENDARME “NOT IMPRESSIVE”

SUCCESS IN STAKES AT RANDWICK

PRINCE DELVILLE WINS A.J.C. DERBY (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 3. Sporting writers agree that the New Zealand horse, Gendarme, did not impress in winning the George Main Stakes at Randwick yesterday. Gendarme had been a veiry firm favourite for the Metropolitan, to be run over one mile and five furlongs next Saturday. After yesterday’s racing, Gendarme and Electro share favouritism for the Metropolitan.

In the George Main Stakes, Gendarme, starting at 9 to 4 on, beat the imported mare, Tarien, by half a length, with another New Zealand horse, Tesla, five lengths away. These were the only starters. Gendarme was having his first run in Australia, but he has run some very fine gallops in recent weeks. It appeared that Gendarme took . too long to beat Tarien, particularly as he met her at standard weight-for-age, under which he made her a 21b concession. On the other hand, he should be improved by the run, because it is doubtful if he wa>

completely fit for his engagement yesterday. Tarien led Gendarme by three lengths at the home turn, and Gendarme, which was being ridden hard, appeared to have a hopeless task in front of him. But he fought on gamely, ran up to Tarien about half a furlong from the post, and had her beaten about 20 yards from the line. Tarien has beaten some ,of the. best weight-for-age horses in Australia over a mile. Gendarme was wearing a bandage On his near foreleg, and was walking short with the off hind leg when he paraded in the enclosure, but looked extremely fit. The trainer, Fred Smith, said the gelding’s run had satisfied him. The Delville Wood colt. Prince Delville, scored a runaway win in the Australian Jockey Club Derby. He beat Telyar by four lengths, after appearing to be hopelessly blocked in the straight. Prince Delville was the smallest colt in the field, but he adapted himself to the muddling pace early, and was able to sprint brilliantly when called upon. Electro scored an impressive win in the Sydney Handicap, and it was as a result of this win that he has been promoted to equal favouritism with Gendarme for the Metropolitan. RISING FAST WINS AT FLEMINGTON BRILLIANT RUN FROM REAR OF FIELD (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 3. Tlie New Zealand horse. Rising Fast, which won the Turnbull Stakes in brilliant style at Flemington yesterday, is still outright favourite for the Caulfield Cup. After sensational course backing yesterday, Gendarme joined Rising Fast temporarily as equal favourite; but, after seeing Rising Fast outclass his weight-for-age rivals, Lookmakers put him back on the top-line position, which he has now held for several weeks.
