DECISIVE WIN FOR DAYBREAK

CHERTSEY HANDICAP AT ASHBURTON

Daybreak, a half-sister to Rupee, began smartly in the Chertsey Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, and worked her way to the front at he end of a furlong and a half. She was passed by Barravey with about three furlongs to run, but she came again in the straight, when Barravey broke, to win comfortably by three lengths.

Barravey and Larnie Scott were checked slightly in the first furlong, but in the oack straight they set out after the leaders and quickly bridged the gap. Barravey went round the field to join Daybreak in front with four and a half furlongs to run. Racing to the furlong they were practically on terms, closely attended by Larnie Scott, Te Waihopi, Quite Contrary, and Romero. Barravey looked to have the race won until he broke half a furlong from the post. J. D. Litten got him back to his gait smartly, but he had no chance of catching Daybreak, which had three lengths to spare, at the post. Te Waihopi, which had every chance, had to be content with another minor placing. She was a length behind Barravey at the post, with two lengths to Quite Contrary’, which trotted a solid race Romero was a length away fifth, a similar distance in front "of the breaking Larnie Scott, with gaps to Kauru Boy and Scotch Paree.

The majority of the field made mistakes at the start and in the running. All Smiles fell with about three furlongs to run, injuring his near shoulder. He was later destroyed.

Star Beam Wins Well Star Beam, which w-as well back at the straight entrance, finished brilliantly to win the Eiffelton Handicap. Dione was the early leader, with Star Beam fourth at the end of a furlong. The last-named broke and drifted to be eleventh at the end of five furlongs. Waitaki Joe raced wide to go to the front with one mile and a quarter to run, but a furlong further on Dione went to the front again. Dione was beaten in the run home, and racing to the furlong Waitaki Joe had control from Dione, Adan, Star Beam, and Princess Peterson. Waitaki Joe looked to have the race won 70 yards from the post, but Star Beam, finishing brilliantly wide out, got up in the last to win by half a length.

Waitaki Joe recorded a sound performance for a three-year-old, and he should not be troubled to win soon. Adan, which looked to be under a good hold racing to the final furlong, did not run on as well as expected and was well beaten, a length behind Waitaki Joe, with five lengths to Princess Peterson, which had every chance. Dione was a length back fifth, four lengths in front of Flaring, Shemara, and Marshall Craig. Gainesway, the 2,2 favourite, was among those to break badly at the start.

Deveron Leads all the Way Deveron led practically from end to end to win the Hinds Handicap in the very smart time of 3min 12 2-ssec for the mile and a half. Deveron was in front before the end of a furlong and she set a torrid pace, which had the majority of the field struggling before the end of half a mile. Surfman was about three lengths behind Deveron racing down the back, and the others were headed by Titania, Blacksmith, Lynberne, Scottish Song, Gay Abbess, and Sue Scott. There was little change as the field reached the straight, but at the furlong Titania was challenging Deveron, with Surfman, Lynberne, i d Sue Scott handy. Titania challenged strongly, but Deveron had enough in reserve to win well by a length. Titania ran a sound race for her placing and ran on well to have a length to spare over Surf man, which had every chance, at the post. Sue Scott made up ground for fourth, only a neck back, eight lengths in front of Lynberne, with a similar distance to Scottish Song, Marshall Foi. and Blacksmith.

Linda Bridget, Bobby Brigade. Royal Present, Zulu’s Pride, Nona Grattan, Golden Present, and Marshall Foi lost ground early.

Victory Cheer Surprises Victory Cheer returned to form at very long odds in the Mount Somers Handicap. The Casanova gelding received a perfect run all the way behind the pacemakers, Glengallan and Superfortress. Pylon raced round the field in the back straight to be alongside the leaders with just under five furlongs to run. Pylon was well beaten before reaching the straight, and racing to the final furlong Glengallan and Superfortress were still in control, with Victory Cheer, Lady Biddy, and Anitra handiest of the others. Superfortress broke about li? * a furlong from the post, leaving Victory Cheer clear. The last-named finished boldly, to win by four lengths. Superfortress continued to gallop and crossed the line in second place. She was subsequently relegated to fourth place and Lady Biddy, which finished a length back in third place, was promoted to second. Lady Biddy had every chance and finished strongly. She was naif a length in front of Anitra, one of the backmarkers. Moth, which had been a long way back in the middle stages of the race, after meeting trouble, was beaten off in fifth place, ahead of Double Brook and the tiring Glengallan.
