HEAVY TRAFFIC SPEED LIMIT

Sir, —The New Zealand Road Safety Council’s approval of raising the speed limit of heavy traffic will be welcomed by transport operators throughout the country. There will be, alas, some county engineers; who will not be in favour, as, from what one can gather, they are not in agreement with heavy trucks operating on their roads at all. Surely, with all the modern equipment at their disposal, roads should be in first-class condition. Who is to blame for these shattering country roads—transport operators, who are paying terrific heavy traffic fees, or poorly organised councils?—Yours, POT HOLE JUMPER, SELWYN COUNTY. September 30, 1954.
