The director of the United States Foreign Aid Programme, Mr Harold Stassen, Is working on a new “save Asia” economic plan, which he hopes to present at the Colombo Plan meeting in Ottawa next week, it was reported today. Details of the plan were not disclosed but it was learned that Mr Stassen at the moment favours a twofold plan which would:— (1) Speed up the evacuation and relief of refugees from Communistoccupied Vietnam in Indo-China. and strengthen the economy of the south. This portion of the plan would be aimed at preventing the Communists from exploiting the vacuum left by the armistice. (2) In a long-range operation build strong and prosperous national economies in Asia through direct aid, low-cost loans, technical assistance, and stimulus to trade. Mr Stassen will lead the United States delegation to the 14-nation Colombo Plan Consultative Committee meeting, beginning on Monday.
