TROTTING Bobby Brigade May Race Well Again At Ashburton

Bobbie Brigade, a most impressive winner in maiden class at Methven last week, is selected to win again in “J® Hinds Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting today. The Brigade gelding, which was purchased at a small three-figure price early this year by his Prebbleton trainer, A. M. Purdon, may prove one of the greatest bargains in recent years. Unfortunately he gets down on nis heels at times, and the resulting soreness has prevented him from being extensively raced. • t Last week at Methven he showed no signs of soreness, but was inclined to ln over the l ast furlong. With further race experience he should soon overcome this habit, and it will not be surprising if the half-brother to Black Douglas and Trixie Milne reaches a tight mark. Surftnan would need to show very little improvement on his second behind Signet Ring at Meth ven to win today. The Josedale Grattan four-year-old finished brilliantly after being slow early in the race last week. Linda Bridget created a good impression when she won at Hutt Park last month. The Sir Michael mare has done well since then, and she should be very fit today. Lynberne, a brother to Rupee, has run fair races in his three appearances this season. He did not run on as well as was expected at Orari last Monday, when he was well beaten by Signet Ring and New Ideal. However, that may have been only a temporary lapse.

Titania and Scottish Song have disappointed in recent weeks. Both are more capable than their recent efforts suggest, and they may add interest to an open race. Daybreak May Win Daybreak, a half-sister U. Scott to Rupee, showed fair form among the trotters towards the end of last season, and she may be the hardest to beat in the Chertsey Handicap. Daybreak is usually a most solid trotter, and, with a reasonable run tomorrow, she will be hard to beat. Larnie Scott trotted a fine race for his win at Methven last Saturday, and the U. Scott stallion should again be prominent today. Larnie Scott, a fine type, seems on the verge of worthwhile form. Te Waihopi has had a long list of placings over the last 12 months, and he is long overdue for a win. His Methven placing was a useful effort, and he. should extend his record today. Barravey met trouble in his race at Methven last Saturday. He looks very well and may be prominent today. Gay Tune, which finished beside Barravey last Saturday, and Bedelia, which paced in her race last week, are expected to do best of the others.

Gainesway, runner-up to Auriferous m his division of tbe Westward Ho Handicap at Methven last week, may win the two-mile Eiffelton Handicap. The Quite Sure gelding is a grand stayer, and it wil be surprising if he fails to show up. Adan finished strongly at Meth ven last week after being very slow early IP race - He should be improved by that run, and may be prominent today. Shemara finished third in her division at Methven last Saturday, but failed over a sprint distance at Orari on Monday. She may be better suited by the long race today, and should be prominent.

Humble Pie, a brother to Sedate, has shown promise at trials and he finished fourth in his division at Methven. He should show improvement as a result of the race, and may show up today. Star Beam was a disappointment at Methven last week. She showed promise at Hutt Park earlier last montn and may be. prominent today. Waitaki Joe, Princess Peterson, and Flaring make most appeal of the remainder. Johnny Globe will be at restricted odds when he attempts to win the All Aged Stakes for the third time in succession. He is reported to have done well lately, and will be difficult to beat.

Most opposition to him may come from Tactician, Young Charles, Caduceus, and Midday, the others in the race making little appeal. Signet Ring and Captain King will probably dispute favourtism for the first leg fo the double, the Elgin Handicap. Both have shown considerable Sromise in their racing, and it will e surprising if they fail to show up. Direct Hall, Cembala, Flywheel, Esteem and Sandy River may also be prominent. Jaunty, Lauder Lass, and Young Sam are a likely trio in the second leg of the double, the President’s Handicap. All three have shown good form this season, and they should be the hardest to beat today. Most opposition to them may come from Fair Annette, Grand Monarch, Frigate, and Real Class. The track at Ashburton should provide first-class going. Selections are:— . 11.20 a.m.—Chertsey Handicap: Davoreak, Lamie Scott, Te Waihopi. Noon^ —Eiffelton Handicap: Gaineswav.
