Treason Trial Opens In Persia
(N.Z. Pi ess Association—Copyright) TEHERAN, Sept. 29. The trial of Dr. Hussein Fatemi, the former Persian Foreign Minister, opened in Teheran today. He is charged with attempting to overthrow the Shah. Fatemi, who was the second man in the last regime, was indicted last month on ftve counts of treason. Dr. Mohammed Mussadiq, his former Prime Minister, was sentenced to three years’ solitary confinement last December. Dr. Fatemi, who was carried into the courtroom on a stretcher, was said to be suffering from the effects of old wounds. He replied slowly to the questums put to him by the President of the Court.
Two other leaders of last summer’s uprising against the Shah, Dr. Ali Shayegan and Ahmad Razavi, also appeared on the same charge. Dr. Shayegan questioned the Court’s competence to try him. While he was fP ea l£ ln g’- fatemi sent a note to the President of the Court, Brigadier Gnotbi, asking for an adjournment. He said it was time for him to have an injection. The Court adjourned until tomorrow.
