DIOCESAN SYNOD NEXT MONTH
BILL ON STIPENDS OF CLERGY
The 1954 session of the synod of tha Diocese of Christchurch will be opened at the Provincial Council Chamber on the afternoon of October 18. when the Bishop of Christchurch; (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) will give his presidential address. The synod service will be held in the Cathedral on the evening of Oc-I tober 18, when the preacher will be' the Ven. R. P. F. Plaistowe, Archdeacon of Timaru. All clergy of the diocese and lay readers will robe for the ceremony.
Clerical and lay conferences will be held on October 19. The followini day Bishop Warren and Mrs Warren will entertain members of the synod •and their wives at morning tea at Bishopscourt. Synod will be required to elect mem. bers to 13 diocesan committees and boards on October 21.
Several bills will be considered, in. eluding one dealing with stipends of clergy. The standing committee has been endeavouring for some time to encourage vestries to increase stipend and the bill seeks to set a minimum stipend of £525 a year in the case of parishes and a maximum stipend of £585 for parochial districts, so long y stipend grants are being recevied from diocesan sources. Another bill concerns standing orders of the synod and a further bill deals with the administration of Craighead Diocesan School, Timaru.
Reports will be presented from several committees and boards, including the standing committee, the Church Property Trustees, the public and social affairs committee and from th® governing bodies of church school!
