COMMODORE OF ORIENT LINE

Captain N. Whinfield Appointed CAPTAIN I. GOLDSWORTHY RETIRES Captain I. E. G. Goldsworthy, R.N.R., Commodore of the Orient Line, has retired. He has been succeeded by Captain Norman A. Whinfield, present master of the line’s newest ship, the 29,000-ton Orsova. Captain Goldsworthy has had a distinguished career spanning 45 years at sea. He has seen service in the Royal Navy in both World Wars. Born in 1894, he began his apprenticeship at the age of 15 In the barque Falkirk, and trained in sail for four years. After serving in various ships of the Grand Fleet Minesweeping Flotilla, he joined the Orient Line as fifth officer in the Osterley in 1921. He served In seven ships of the line before being appointed staff commander in the first Oronsay in 1938. He was mentioned in dispatches in the St. Nazalre action when his ship was bombed while embarking troops. As a captain in the Royal Naval Reserve, he later became Commodore of Convoys. The first post-war appointment taken up by Captain Goldsworthy was that of staff commander in the Orontes. In December, 1946, he was appointed captain of the Ormonde, and subsequently he commanded the Otranto, the Orontes, and the Orcades. On January 1, 1951, he became Commodore of the line. His last two commands were the Oronsay and the Orion. Captain Whinfield is 58. He began his career in the middle of World War I, serving as second mate in the transport Ramsay. He was commended for gallantry and good seamanship for his part in an action with a submarine which the Ramsay engaged and sank off Dakar In 1918. He joined the Orient Line in 1923 in the old Orspva. By 1929, he had reached the rank of chief officer. He went ashore as assistant marine superintendent in 1936, and except for two voyages in the Orontes as staff commander, retained this appointment until 1947, when he took up a position as stand-by captain of the Orontes during her refit from March, 1947, to May, 1948. He later commanded the Ormonde, the Orion, and the Orcades. Last November, Captain Whinfield was appointed stand-by captain of the new Orsova during her completion at Barrow, and he has commanded her since her maiden voyage early this year.
