Altered Date in Reference.—A 52-year-old woman was fined £2 at Brighton under a 160-year-old law—the Servants Character’s Act —the “Evening News” reported. She pleaded guilty to having offered herself as a servant with false certificates of character. A police witness admitted that the woman had an irreproachable character and had altered the date on a reference because she was afraid her age would prevent her from getting a job. She had acted “in sheer desperation.’’ he said.—London. September 21.
