RANFURLY SHIELD
Sir,—Pehaps we who watched could be enlightened as to the time played in the second spell of Saturday’s Ranfurly Shield game. It was noted that the clock stopped during the second spell. When it was started it appears that 3YA’s announcer informed the public that it was showing two or three minutes less than actual time played. Canterbury scored when the clock already showed full time and a little more; and thus Otago lost the shield they really won. Is it not possible to have someone reliable in charge of the clock and thus avoid such unfortunate occurrences in the future? And when, oh when, are we going to see the much vaunted, brilliant Vincent-Wilson combination in action? Despite them, Canterbury still holds the shield. —Yours, etc., INTERESTED. September 20, 1954.
[“The referee is the official timekeeper and the clock is only for the guidance of spectators,” said Mr A. C. Felton, secretary of the Canterbury Rugby Union, in reply to this letter.]
