APPEAL TO TAX EVADERS

FULL DISCLOSURE DESIRED

NO PROSECUTION OR PUBLICITY "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, August 28. Appeals to tax evaders to come forward and make a full disclosure to the authorities were made by the Commissioner of Inland Revenue (Mr F. G Oborn) and the Deputy-Commissioner (Mr J. F. Boyd) at a taxation symposium attended by a large number of public accountants in the Auckland University College hall. Mr Oborn told his audience that he would make a final appeal to their clients, “or otherwise,” to come forward and make a clean breast of it. “The man who deliberately refrains from paying his tax is depriving you and me of our share of the revenue. “If you know of anyone who is prepared to come forward and make a voluntary disclosure you can be sure the department wiJJ play the game,” said Mr Boyd. “The department will not prosecute nor will excessive penal tax be charged. There will be no publicity by way of notice in the Gazette—and it is publicity that hurts more than anything.”
