SOUTH .ISLAND BEATS NORTH, 2-1 (New Zealand Press Association) * DUNEDIN, August 29. 5 The climax to a week of men’s hockey 1 in Dunedin was the inter-island match played at the University Oval yesterday. The match ended the celebrations of the ] Otago Hockey Association’s jubilee. • The result was a win for the South Island by 2 goals to 1. < Teams for the match were:— North Island.—D. Goldsmith, R. Brook, B. Johnson, R. Callin, K. Nicholson, K. ] Adams, J. Eastwood, A. Hayde, H. i Englert, D. Tooby, W. Woodmore. T. Moresby replaced Nicholson, who was in- ( jured in the first spell. South Island.—J. Hastings, M. Down, J. Abrams, J. Stirling, J. Mann, M. Loudon, • C. Currie, I. Smith, E. Thomas, J. Kiddey. i Smith and Thomas were prominent in the early stages of the match, when South Island was on attack, with J. Kiddey, on the left wing, making some good runs. Each side was awarded two penalty corners but neither could capitalise. J. Stirling had a shot, but Goldsmith cleared well. North Island broke away and A. Hayde, showing smart stickwork, netted, but the goal was disallowed. Hayde made a good run for North Island and passed to D. Tooby, who beat the South goalkeeper with a welltimed flick shot. In the second half. South Island’s first goal came from a penalty bully against T. Moresby, who obstructed J. Stirling when the latter was in a scoring position. Smith won the bully for South Island. ■ ■ South Island stormed the North Island line, but could not score from three penalty corners. Eventually, J. Stirling cut in, drew the North goalkeeper and put South Island in the lead. Soon afterwards. Stirling had another shot, but this was disallowed because of kicks. In a curtain-raiser, Auckland, winner of the major section of the tournament, beat Wairarapa, the minor section Wanner, by 4 to 1. COMPETITION MATCHES With a number of players absent in Dunedrj. little interest was taken in competition hockey matches on Saturday, and .most matches went by default. Results of games played were: — Representative Matches. Primary Schools B 4, West Coast 1; Canterbury 2nd Grade 2. West Coast 1. Under 15 Grade.—High School Old Boys 2, New Brighton 1: Selwyn 7, Sydenham Under 14 Grade.—Selwyn 3. Redcliffs 2; B.R.A. 12, Selwyn B 2; Woolston 2, Trinity 2; Svdenham 3, High School Old Boys 1. Women’s Senior B Grade.—Aranui 3, Hornby 2.
