Exodus scored his first success as a • jumper when he contested a good finish to hold off Brutus and Composition in ■ the Seaview Hurdles at Wingatui on Saturday. ! Thruster moved through on the inner to race clear at the mile, where Delayed. Black Briar, Exodus, Legal Note, and Brutus were in close order, ahead of Wealthy smd Knight Abbot. Exodus moved through to join Black Briar in front at the three,. and into the straight they were being challenged by Composition, Brutus, and Wealthy, with Thruster losing ground, and The Tongs and Tenner heading the others. Wilshire Surprises Wilshire, the eighth favourite in a field of nine, drew out over the last three furlongs of the Irwin Steeplechase, and won by 150 yards from Erin’s Smile, which had done most of the pacemaking. The Grange caught Mentor near the post to get up for third. There was plenty of incident from the start. Gabriel’s Gully, the favourite, took the wrong course soon after the start, and had to go back. Then Canzona and Pity fell at the brush at the top of the straight the first time, and Dimlight went down at the post-and-rails about nine furlongs from home. Erin’s Smile and Wilshire were on terms starting the last mile, five lengths clear of Mentor, which hooked the second of the double near the six furlongs.
