MID-CANTERBURY WINS
MARLBOROUGH BEATEN, 1716, AT ASHBURTON A representative match played at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday between Mid-Canterbury and Marlborough was won by Mid-Canterbury by 17 points (a goal from a try, two tries, and two penalty goals) to 16 (two goals from tries, a try, and a penalty goal). The Mid-Can-terbury forwards gave their best display in the tight to date, especiaUy in the first half, and the backs were at their best on defence. After leading by 9 points to 3 at halftime, Mid-Canterbury took a lead of 17-8 after 32 minutes of the second speU, but Marlbprough reduced the margin to score , a penalty goal and a converted try. Good displays were given by both full backs, Meachem and G. Baker. J. L. I Green and I. McDonald were two elusive wings for Marlborough, the latter making some particularly good thrusts along the ‘ touch-line. The Mid-Canterbury wings, i H. J. Cull«i and E. I. Ralston, tackled soundly, and each scored a good try. A. i Gledhill played well at five-eighths for i Marlborough, sorely trying the home del fence on occasions with dodging runs t down the middle of the field. lan Humt phrey was the mainstay of the Mid-Can-i terbury back line, taking some difficult ■ passes in fine style.
In the Marlborough forwards, P. L. Stuart and R. A. Jensen did good work in the loose and in the line-outs,andß. J. Fissenden and P. Kotua showed up in the tight R. T. Dawson hooked well for Mid--1 Canterbury, and was also prominent in the mose, where I. H. Gallagher, _W. J. Whineray W. J. Hunter, and B. W. Dwyer a tap stOOO OUt. For Mid-Canterbury, tries were scored 1 by Cullen (2) and W. J. Hunter. Humphrey kicked two penalty goala, and W. ; J. Whlneray converted one try. Marlborough’s points came from tries ; by J. L. Green. P. U Stuart, and P. I Kotua, one ol which was converted by 3. H. P. Houghton, who also kicked a penI alty goal. M. B. Farrington also coni verted one try. Mr J. Luke was referee.
Junior Match Mid-Canterbury's second grade representatlves had an easy win against EUesmere in the curtain-raiser at the domain oval, winning by 23 points (a goal from a try and six tries) to 5 (a goal from a try), after leading by 6 points to 0 at half-time. For Mid-Canterbury, tries were scored by K. L. Kircher (2), B. Watkins, A. Sheate, B. Lynskie, R. McLenaghan, and D. McKay, and Kircher converted one. For Ellesmere, M. • Glen scored, and B. Dailey converted. The referee was Mr C. Wilson.
