MAORIS LOSE TO N.Z. TEAM
Spectacular Game At Auckland SCORE 24-20 AFTER FAST PLAY (Naw Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 29. New Zealand yesterday beat the Maori Rugby team which toured Fiji 24-20 in a spectacular game at Eden Park. New Zealand gained an early lead, and until the final whistle vthere was rarely slackening in the play. R. A. Jarden scored for New Zealand within a minute of the start. He chased and seized a rolling ball, outflanked the Maori defence, and touched down in the corner. N. P. Cherrington just failed with several, penalty kicks. After 17 minutes H. C. Marrett scored for New Zealand from -a hectic scramble for a loose ball behind the Jdaori goal-line, Jarden had an easy conversion, and the score was New Zealand 8, New Zealand Maoris 0. Bremner scored a try soon after this, and Jarden converted. J. W. Kelly was the next scorer, coming into the back line and touching down in the comer. Jarden converted. After 27 minutes, the Maoris got their first points from a penalty goal by W. N. Gray. > The Maoris made a fast attack, and Wilson scored a try behind the posts. Gray converted. Maoris kept up the pressure and K. Davis scored. Gray . missed the kick.
The half-time score was: New Zealand 3 18, New Zealand Maoris 11. Wilson had to retire soon after halftime, and Ngawati, his replacement, went to second five-eighths. Gray going to centre and Menzies to the wing. After a 30-yard dash, Jones scored a try, and the total was 21-11. Within a few minutes Cherrington came up on the blind side, and slipped the ball to Menzies for a try. Almost immediately gfter this, Bremner kicked a goal from 40 yards. • R. Clarke next scored an excellent try. 1 Pryor made a long run. Gray fnissed a : penalty from 20 yards, and then, in the last minutes, an excellent kick and 10l- . low rush by Menzies was capped when Tapsell scored.
