BRITISH CYCLE SALES IN U.S.
“SUCCESS STORY OF INDUSTRY ”
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, August 28. British bicycle manufacturers have provided one of the “success stories” of British export industries, the “Financial Times” said today.
Last year, total exports of bicycles, motor-cycles, parts and accessories brought in £36,000,000, with bicycles accounting for most of it. And the increase. is continuing, according to figures so far compiled for this year. “While the Commonwealth countries together account tor the largest proportion of these exports, the most important single market is ttye United States,” said the newspaper. “Bicycles alone had earned nearly £2,100.000 in America by the end of July this year—a rise of £400,000 on a year ago.” * However, this very success carried its own dangers in the promise by the United States Tariff Commission to investigate the Situation. “Their finding can only be that the British machine does in fact constitute a danger to the American industry.” The newspaper said that nearly one in four bicycles now sold in America was British.
