CHAIRMAN ADDRESSES ANNUAIf CONFERENCE

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 26. The Red Cross Society was a counter to the possibilities of another world war, said the chairman of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Mr A. E. Gibbons), at the annual conference of the society. He said delegates had a great responsibility to hold fast to the-society and develop it in the interests of humanity. By its activities the society could help to avert another world holocaust.

The organisation had always been noted for its practical work and common-sense views, and he urged delegates to do all in their power to preserve and foster in their own communities these aims.

Mr Gibbons reported that, durin' the year, £23.000 in cash and £250,0W in kind had been sent to Britain an.Holland for flood relief, £BBOO in cast and £50,000 in clothing to the earth quake area in the lonian Islands, £2s' in cash to flood victims in Japan, £5OO worth of milk products to Malaya, gift parcels to the New Zealand forces in Korea, and food parcels to the United Kingdom.
