CURRENT NOTES

Miss Sally Butler, an employee of the State Department in Washington, will arrive in Australia at the end of this week to begin a tour for the department. Miss Butler, who is the immediate past-president of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, is legal research director for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of America. In Australia she will attend the conference of the Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women, which will be held at Newcastle from September 3 to September 7. Miss Butler will visit New Zealand.

Miss J. Wright, of the Country Library Service, spoke on books for children at the August meeting of the Bryndwr branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs R. W. D. Maxwell presided over a good attendance of mothers, accompanied by their children, some of whom gave items. A group of children also sang with the choir. The smaller children-were cared for in the erkche by Mesdames Gardiner and Mayson. The Christchurch branch of the Federation of University Women held its August meeting at the Sign of the Takahe recently, when the president (Mrs W. Graht) welcomed 44 members and friends. Special greetings were extended to Miss Brenda Slade, who recently returned from Britain, where she has been studying at Cambridge University under a fellowship granted by the federation. Members discussed plans for the purchase of clubrooms, and a sub-committee was set up to investigate the matter. Mr Wilfrid Peers was the guest speaker at a morning meeting of tne Canterbury Travel Club yesterday. Mr Peers, who recently returned from a world tour by air, gave his impressions of the many places he visited. Songs were sung by Mr Brian Hogue, for whom Mrs W. E. Olds was accompanist. Mrs Sedley Wells welcomed the visitors, and Mrs Read Masters thanked the speaker and the artists.

Four new members were enrolled at the monthly meeting of the Riccarton branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs W. Grant presided. Members agreed to assist with the sorting of clothes for CORSO. Mrs Bait cared for 10 children in the creche. '

Plant parenthood was the subject of a talk given by Mr W. Humm to the August meeting of the Oxford Garden Club. Results of competitions were as follows: decorative A. floral arrangement in moss: Mrs E. Knowles 1, Miss L. McGrath 2, Mrs F. Gorton 3; decorative B, Mrs C. H. Mears 1, Mrs P. Amor 2, Mrs R. E.
