CYPRUS
Sir,—N. M. Bell, always anxious to “haive a go” at the British Government, is greatly concerned over its action in refusing to grant self-govern-ment to the colony of Cyprus. In this case he has allowed his zeal to overcome his judgment, for he knows full well that the Government had no option, after agreeing to the evacuation of the Suez Canal. With 52,000,000 of a population to cater for in food, as well as other commodities, it is imperative that that right-of-way be kept open at all costs. The subtle oriental is not too keen on keeping agreements, if he thinks they do not always suit him; so therefore no chances could be taken by the government concerned.—Yours, etc., O. M. BRUNDALL. August 21, 1954.
