STREET LAMPS

Sir, —When I went 'out to get my milk at just on 7.25 a.m. today, I was amazed to see the street lamps burning. In the evening we patiently sit in the dark from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., saving electricity. The street lamps blaze wantonly, between 7 p.m. and 7.30 a.m. in broad daylight—Yours, etc., D.E.M. August 18, 1954. [When this letter was .referred to the chief electrical engineer of the M.E.D. (Mr G. H. Battersby) he said that the Municipal Electricity Department’s street lights in the city were operated by time switches set at 6.45 a.m. Anyone observing street lights on after that time should ring the department (87-330), and state the locality.]

Sir,—lt was very “illuminating” this morning, August 18, to look out of the door of my home in Somerfield, at 7.15 a.m. and find the large street lamps in Colombo street, and also other streets in the vicinity, shining brightly. Having regard to the annua] moan about water shortage, and the inconvenience of power cuts, perhaps the consumers could be told the reason for lighting the streets in daylight.— Yours, etc., “JOHN BLUNT.” August 18, 1954.
