COLLEGE TOURNEY AT WANGANUI

CHRIST’S WINS, 11-3, AGAINST NELSON "The Press** Special Service WANGANUI, Aug. 22.’ Christ’s College maintained its unbeaten record so far this season when it beat Nelson College, 11-3, in the opening game of the quadrangular college Rugby tournament, played at Wanganui Collegiate School yesterday. In the second match, Wanganui Collegiate "School beat Wellington College, 21-8. On Monday, Christ’s College will play Wanganui in the final, and Wellington will play Nelson. The deciding factor in the Christ’s College success yesterday was its virile forwards, who gradually wore down a stubborn Nelson pack and thus paved the way for the Christ's College backs to score the winning points. In the first half. Nelson led 3-0, and its big centre, Hamilton-Gibbs, caused many anxious moments when he made efforts to breach the Christ’s College defence. Battling hard in the second half, the Christ's College forwards gained the upper hand, but the backs failed to make headway against solid tackling. In the last 15 minutes, Christ’s College made a great effort, and Ford scored a try, which Greenslade converted. Then Greenslade kicked a penalty, and later Park scored. For Christ’s College, Greenslade played an excellent game at half-back, and was always on the baH. Ford, at centre, made a good job of stopping HamiltonGibbs. Park showed pace <Jn the wing. Williams, Batchelor, and Kennan did well in a hard-working pack. Hamilton-Gibbs was Nelson’s best back. Pickering and Perring were the best forwards. Wanganui Collegiate School gave its best exhibition of the season in beating Wellington. The Wanganui forwards, led by their captain, Earle, played excellently. Among the best Wanganui forwards were Byres and Duffy. Nitz and Brooker were the most impressive Wanganui backs. Tries for Wanganui were scored by Duffy, Brooker, Earle, and Zohrab and Nitz converted three tries and kicked a penalty. Young and Hopkirk scored tries for Wellington, and Bringans * converted one try. INTER-COLLEGE GAME ST. PATRICK’S BEATS ST. BEDE’S "The Press’* Special Service WELLINGTON, August 22. St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, beat St. Bede’s College by 6 points to 3 in their annual match at Athletic Park on Saturday. For St. Patrick’s. T. J. Leamy scored a try and M. W. Clegg kicked a penalty goal. L. McLeod kicked a penalty, goal for St. Bede’s. The St Bede’s backs seemed completely unable to judge passes or kicks. They had much the better of play in the first spell, and on many occasions went close to scoring, but fumbling proved costly. The half-time Score was 3-all. In the second spell, -after St. Patrick’s had scored a penalty goal, McLeod had a chance to even the scores, but missed a comparatively easy kick. At times St. Bede’s produced some- excellent rushes. It appeared that the team would have been capable of a good display if it had mastered the mindy conditions that prevailed. P. D. Dwyer, K. J. CFShannessey, and B. W. Judkins were lively forwards. At fullback, K. M. Doyle was one of the best players on the field. UNDER 17 GRADE MATCH SOUTH CANTERBURY WINS South Canterbury overwhelmed Canterbury in an under 17 representative match, played as a curtain-raiser to she Ranfurly Shield game, and even though South Canterbury won by 23 points to 8, the difference in the scores in no way represented the merits of the two teams. When they attacked, the South Canterbury backs always looked likely to score. The Canterbury line showed little dash. In the forwards, South Canterbury was more fiery than the Canterbury pack. Included in the South Canterbury pack was N. Moffatt, the outstanding player on the field. His play in all departments was of a very high standard. For South Canterbury, P. Stringer, R. Bailey, B. Wilson, F. Rollinson, and C. Fowler scored tries, one of which was converted by Fowler, and J. \ Leary kicked two penalty goals. Canterbury’s points came from a try by R. Smith, which D. Thurlow converted. Thurlow also kicked a penalty goal. Mr A. G. F. Gurnsey was referee. HOROWHENUA BEATS BUSH (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Aug. 22.
