MAORIS WIN IN SECOND TEST

The Maori Rugby team won the second test by 16 points to 8 after leading 8-5 at half-time. The match was fought keenly throughout, with the Fijian forwards doing extremely well. However, the Fijian backs failed to get going. Conditions were difficult and Buckhurst Park, at Lauthala Bay, was almost waterlogged after heavy rain. The Maori pack showed the best form of the tour. The first score was a try by Cavalevu, converted by Ranavue. The Maoris retaliated with a copy-book back line movement after which Wilson scored a try which was converted by Gray. Gray kicked two penalty goals as well as converting a later try by Menizes. The Fijian forwards, to the delight of a record crowd—estimaated at more than 5000—kept pushing the Maoris bask and a penalty by Ranavue brought the? Fijian score within three of the Maoris* 11. Gray’s conversion of Menzies* try settled the issue. The Maori co-manager, Mr Walker, said after the match that the Fijians had learn somt useful lessons in Australia, which were now paying dividends. The third test on Tuesday is “anybody's game.” TARANAKI BEATS KING COUNTRY (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. August 22. Taranaki beat King Country in a representative Rugby match at Stratford on Saturday by 8 points to 3. G. Deaking scored for Taranaki, and E. Aylward converted the try and kicked a penalty goal. P. Meredith scored a try for King Country.
