HAREWOOD TROPHY MATCH

CHRISTCHURCH BEATS LINWOOD The last match in the Harewood trophy series,' between Christchurch and Linwood, which had been postponed because the death of Colin Bailey, was played at-the west ground at Lancaster Park on Saturday. Christchurch, obtaining a feast of the ban, scored a -try, to win by 3 points to 0. The outcome of the match could not seriously affect the final placings in the competition, and as a result both teams attempted to play bright football. They succeeded, although the standard of play was not very high. The Christchurch backs had so much of the baH from, scrums and line-outs that at times they were embarrassed by it. Although the Linwood backs made few orthodox attacks, they turned the tables on Christchurch on many occasions by pouncing on dropped passes and loose balls. In this style of play the Linwood loose forwards. R. Tabb and J. Adams, stood out. Linwood held the ascendancy to the loose, and in this play Christchurch was hard put to it to keep its line intact. Other Linwood forwards to do sterling work were B. Travella and P. McDonald. The Christchurch backs did not function very weH and the deadly tackling °f the Linwood backs forced them to use their wings irt- chasing cross-kicks. Notable in this department was the former Canterbury wing, A. Cochrane, ‘ who showed that he has lost none of his speed and determination. M. Gold and the halfback, K. Allsop, Were not an extremely happy combination, mainly because of the attention paid to Gold by the Linwood loose forwards. J. Staines and A. Bellamore were the two -hardest-working forwards in the Christchurch pack. Christchurch’s points came from a try by A. Dalzell after 30 minutes of play in the second speU. Gold failed to convert. Mr J. A. Johnston was referee.
