BOY FATALLY INJURED

STRUCK BY EXPRESS TRAIN ACCIDENT AT ST. ANDREWS (New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, August 12. A schoolboy cyclist was fatally injured when he was struck by the north-bound express train on the St. Andrews crossing at 4.10 p.m. today. He was Alister Sparks, aged 11, son of Mr and Mrs Jack Sparks, St. Andrews. It is understood that the boy and a schoolmate, James Anneft, were waiting in the township to take part in a concert rehearsal. They cycled along the street and on to the railway crossing, just opposite the Post Office. Annett crossed safely, but Sparks was struck by the train, which was travelling about 50 miles an hour. Sparkes was dragged about a chain. Dr. L. J. Mclver, of Timaru, was in St. Andrews at the time, and was on the scene almost immediately. The boy died within 10 minutes.
