NEW FERTILISER FACTORY
Suggested Investment Of Pool Funds FARMERS’ SPOKESMAN COMMENDS SCHEME (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 12. The investment of farmers’ reserves in apy essential new fertiliser plant would help farmers by overcoming the chronic shortage of supplies, said Mr W. N. Perry, chairman of the fertiliser committee of Federated Farmers, today. It would also help the country generally by providing the means for increasing productivity. Mr Perry said Federated Farmers’ Dominion conference had supported fully the establishment of farmerowned co-operative fertiliser works in any area where there was a need for a new works. j In addition, the conference had con-, sidered that the reserve funds belonging to the meat, wool, and dairy pro-
ducers should be used to assist in the establishment of a works, said Mr Perry. By a co-operative works, he meant one that provided for shareholders who were users of the product. and for the payment of rebates to these users. Mr Perry said reports from the federation’s branches this year had shown conclusively that supplies of fertiliser in the Auckland Province—where 50 per cent, of New Zealand’s total supplies were produced—and some other areas in the autumn of 1954 had been hopelessly inadequate to meet farmers’ demands. The aerial topdressing industry had also stated publicly that it would be capable of doubling its turnover with the present number of aircraft engaged. if sufficient supplies of superphosphate were available to keep the industry fully employed, Mr Perry concluded.
