Quest For Spanish Armada Galleon

CN.Z. Press Association—Copyright) _. , LONDON, August 10. The Duke of Argyle, a Scottish landowner, said today he was annoyed at reports that his quest for a sunken Spanish galleon was mainly a treasure hunt. The 51-year-old Duke has organised an expedition to raise the galleon from Tobermory Bay, Scotland, where it sank in 1588. The ship was in the Spanish Armada which tried to invade the England of Queen Elizabeth I. In a statement issued by his literary agent, the Duke declared: “This is not essentially a treasure hunt. The report that there is £3,000.000 worth of gold in the ship is surmise,’’ he said. “The expedition is an attempt to identify and explore the only known galleon of the Spanish Armada. That is what attracts me.” He said that about 10 persons would be involved in the expedition. The salvage equipment to be used was of the latest type and should be “quite adequate for the purpose.’’ The depot ship of the expedition, the Ardchattan, is taking on stores in the Clyde. With other salvage craft, including a dredger, she will arrive in Tobermory Bay early next week.
