FINALS OF OVERSEAS LEAGUE CONTEST The 12 provincial winners of the Overseas League’s public speaking contest for secondary school pupils this year comprise six boys and six girls. From districts between Auckland and Invercargill they will assemble at Timaru at the end of this month for the finals on September 2, when they will compete for the Anthony Eden Cup (held by the winning school) and for a week’s holiday or a book order for the winning individual. The finalists are:—

Auckland: G. I. Silvester (Otahuhu College); Hamilton, Diane Williams (Putaruru High School); Gisborne. Jeanette Harris (Gisborne High Schol); Hawke’s Bay, Roy Peach (Napier Boys’ High School); Manawatu, James Greenaway (Horowhenua College); Wellington, Susan Mitcalfe (Hutt Valley High School); Nelson. Douglas Evans (Nelson College); Christchurch. Garry Mahon (St. Bede’s College): South Canterbury, Barbara Blakely (Craighead Diocesan School); Oamaru, Bridget Armstrong (Dominican College, Teschemakers); Dunedin, Yvonne Looney (St. Philomena’s College): and Southland, Denis Lenihan (Marist Bros. High School). The finalists will assemble in Timaru on August 31, and will be the guests of the South Canterbury branch of the Overseas League until September 3. They will be entertained at morning tea in the City Council Chambers on September 1, and scenic drives and visits to Timaru industries have been arranged. Ita the Y.W.C.A. hall on the evening of September 2 each finalist will speak for up to seven minutes on the subject, “The Commonwealth’s Task in Southeast Asia.”
