HUNT BALL

COLOURFUL GATHERING The Christchurch Hunt Club’s annual ball has long been regarded as one of the major social events of the year and one at which many visitors to the city are pleasantly entertained. It was a most successful and very enjoyable gathering with effective and appropriate decorations, an excellent attendance, and really beautiful dresses, and the presence of many members hunts with their different coloured coat-revers gave it a distinction of its own. Among these were several members of the Christchurch Hunt, Messrs Angus Macdonald and H. C. Greenwood (joint masters of the Brackenfield Hunt) and Messrs Kenneth Graham and T. Murray (South Canterbury Hunt). Also invited as honoured guests were the masters of the Otago, Waimate, and Starborough (Marlborough) Hunts. The ballroom was gay with panel posters of hunting scenes, large bowls of pink and white blossom, and several potplants. In the supper room, red leaves and berries were used with excellent decorative effect. Members of tne organising committee were. Mrs John Montgomery, Mrs G. H. Grigg, Mrs Frank Wilding, Mrs Colin Austin, Misses P. Boyle, Susan Grigg and Juliet Deans, Messrs C. Auslm, D. H. Grigg, D. C. Gould, H. C. Greenwood, and R. W. Nurse (secretary). Mrs Austin wore a frock of blue and silver brocade, Miss Boyle midnight blue georgette with very full skirt: Miss Grigg, pale grey nylon mounted on taffeta of a deeper shade with shoulder straps and belt of narrow cherry coloured velvet ribbon; Miss Deans wore a spray of orchids on her frock of black and green brocade. Among North Island visitors were Miss Ann Scoones, of Wellington, daughter of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, and Miss Juliet Hale, of Gisborne, who is connected with the Poverty Bay Hunt.
