Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Smith and Lady Smith will leave Harewood by DC-6 today for Sydney. Mrs Colin Deans (Masterton) is visiting Christchurch and is the guest of Mrs Maurice Macfarlane, Armagh street West. Mrs A. F. Johnson (Dominion president of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union), Mrs K. McCreanor (vice-president), and Mrs M. F. Sorrell (secretary) will leave Christchurch on Saturday to attend the annual conference of the union in Palmerston North next week.

Miss I. G. Fife has been appointed by the City Council as a member of the art advisory committee of the McDougall Art Gallery. Mrs C. L. Orbell (South Canterbury) returned last week from a trip to Fiji. Miss Juliet Hale (Gisborne), who has been the guest of Mrs B. G. Rutherford, is now staying with Miss Kathleen Rutherford,, North Canterbury. Mr E. H. Norman, High Commissioner fbr Canada, and Mrs Norman returned to Wellington on Monday from Fiji. Mass Carolyn C. Fix, a Fulbright scholar from the University of Syracuse, New York State, to tne University of Queensland, Australia, is on a holiday tour of New Zealand. Several very pleasant dinner parties were held last night and in most cases the guests later attended the Christchurch Hunt Ball. Two of the hostesses were members of the committee—Mrs Colin Austin, who entertained at her home at Riccarton, and Miss Juliet Deans who, with her sister, Mrs Brian Johnson, was hostess to several friends. The August meeting of the Fendalfon Garden Club was held yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs W. La Partridge, Kotare road, Mrs A. R, Blank presiding. Mrs H. J. Quarrell was the guest speaker, her subject being seasonal planting and preparation of soils for garden plants. A bring and buy sale, in charge of Mrs J. S Royds, Mrs S. L. Partridge, Mrs H. P. Lawry, Mrs D. Orchard, and Mrs G. H. Royds, realised £4 4s in aid of the Horticultural Society’s building fund.
