CENSURE OF McCARTHY

Court Rules At

Inquiry

(Rec. 10 p.m.) WArHINGTON. Aug. 9. A six-member Senate inquiry committee voted unanimously today to

permit Senator Joseph McCarthy (Republican, Wisconsin), to cross-examine witnesses in public hearings, beginning on August 30, oh censure charge! against him.

Senator Arthur Watkins (Republican, Utah), chairman of the inquiry group, announced after a three-nour closed meeting that the committee would operate under Court rules, generally barring hearsay evidence on the 46 charges involving aftleged unbecoming conduct by Senator McCarthy. Senator Watkins told a press conference that under the rules members of the committee would be able to object when any evidence was offered that they felt did not bear directly on the charges. “We intend to conduct these hearings in a largely judicial manner,” he said. “The charges are rather grave. It is a serious matter and we want to conduct the investigation within the dignity of the United States Senate,"

Spectators and reporters would ba permitted to attend the hearings, but Senator Watkins said there would be no recording for radio, television or newsreels permitted and no live broadcasts.
