PEERAGE FOR MR LYTTELTON
Retirement From Politics
(Rec. S p.m.) LONDON, August ». Mr Oliver Lyttelton, who resigned as Colonial Secretary last month, has been created a viscount it was announced from No. 10 Downing Street tonight. Mr Lyttelton, aged 61, had been Colonial Secretary since 1951. When he
resigned he announced that he wag returning to business in the city. In 1040. when Mr Lyttelton changed from business to politics, it was said that he was giving up earnings of £25,000 * i year for the £5OOO a year as President of the war-time Board of Trade. Mr Lyttelton has now taken up again his old position as head of Associated Elec- , trical Industries. Ltd. His elevation to the House of Lords will cause a by-election at Aldershot---the fifth by-election pending The , other four are Lakefield, Aberdare, Morpeth and East Croydon. In 1951, at Aidershot, Mr Lyttelton had a majority of 8549 over the Labour candidate.
