SCHOOLING AT RICCARTON

’CHASERS TRIED OVER BIG FENCES

LAY OFF GIVES ONE OF BEST DISPLAYS

Horses ran off, baulked, fell, lost I their riders—did practically everything i wrong in the book when tried over the • steeplechase fences at Riccarton yesl terday. It was one of the most event- ' ful schooling mornings for years. A l good round by Lay Off, Repayment, i and Fox Fun saved what would other- : wise have been a farcical morning’s I schooling . 1 Lay Off (B. J.’ Langford) and Re- . payment (J. Potter) were on terms I throughout their round just ahead of . Fox Fun (R. J. Turnwald). They main- [ tained a good standard of jumping throughout, the only flaw, and it was a slight one, was that Lay Off jumped out slightly at the second of the kennels double, but the Wellington Steeplechase winner’s first run over the Riccarton country gained him many supporters for the Homeby Steeplechase tomorrow and the Grand National a week later. Swift View (M. V. Coon) started with the other three, but became urv balanced on landing over the first of the kennels double and baulked at the second of the double, bumping Coon out of the saddle and over the fence. Coon was uninjured, and later completed the round on the Surview gelding. This was quite an uneventful part of the mornings work after what, had occurred earlier. Gunpowder Falls Gunpowder (K. Nuttall), Probator (J.’Hely), Sentinel (W. J. Hillis), Glenlivet (M. H. Hillis), and Noble Jim (Mr C. J. Boyle) jumped the sod wall and the post and rails safely, but Gunpowder fell when trying to run off at the first of the kennels double, and checked Probator, which sqmersaulted. The others were caught in the mix-up and ran off at the second of the double. Tried again at the second of the : double, Glenlivet went over safely but Sentinel ran off. They were taken back to jump this fence again, and they led Noble Jim round to finish at Cutts’s. ; Six hdrses went out later to jump a round of the country, but only one, Border Reiver, got round without making a mistake, • though Dunwold ’ was unlucky not to do so. Avonhead (A. G. Walsh) ran off at ■ the second fence, the post and rails, and i Manoeuvre (R. J. Turnwald) cannoned 1 into the wing of the second of the 1 kennels double when attempting to run off. There St. Truin (C. G. Low) baulked and dropped his rider,’ leaving Border Reiver (B. J. Langford), Sultry c (E. G. Rosewame) and Dunwold (J. 1 Woolliams) to carry on. Sultry Collides with Dunwold c

Sultry ran off on the inside of the , brush at the. top of the straight, but went on and was clear of Border Beiver and Dunwold running through the straight. Rosewarne eased her to allow the other pair to draw up going to Cutts’s, but she attempted to run off on the -inside of that fence, and collided with Dunwold, which was pushed on to the wing and fell. Border Reiver had little room to work in, but he jumped the fence well. Later Manoeuvre and Gunpowder teamed up at the kennels double, and completed the rest of the round safely by jumping Cutts’s together. Nuttall took Gunpowder oii to jump the sod wall again. Silent Sol’s introduction to the Riccarton country was a run over Cutts’s and the sod wall. Ridden by C. G. he jumped them at a sound pace. After a sharp frost, the No. 1 grass was found to be unsuitable for fast work, and the outside of the course proper was made available. After the thaw, it was cutting out, but times were good. Declare did an outstanding final trial for the Brabazon Handicap, ’and recorded the fastest six furlongs of the morning. Overboard was another Brabazon candidate to sprint fast, and the unraced Scuppered, his two-year-old sister, did well .to finish on terms with him.

Declare (A. J. Stokes) gave Copenhagen (W. Hanlin) a start from the six furlongs, and finished alongside him, reeling off the distance in Imin 16 o-ssec, and the last half mile in 50 l-ssec. It was a first-class trial, and one that showed Declare to the best advantage. Archbishop (T. J. Smith) and Royal Charm (G. W. Mein) were two of the earliest workers over six furlongs. Archbishop finished four lengths clear of the Royal Arch filly, and recorded Imin 18 3-ssec, the last half mile m 51 2-ssec.

Gold Trend (G. H. Styles) and Highwayman (L. J. Ellis) were joined near the six furlongs by Sherpa (C. T. Wilson) and Passchenedaele (B. S. Finlayson), and they sprinted from there in Imin 20 3-ssec, the; last halfmile in 51 2-ssec. ’

Smart Sprint Bosky (R. E. Johnstone)/ and Surprise Ending (K. R. Belsham) did well to record Imin 18 l-ssec for six furlongs. They were on terms after running the last half mile in 51 3-ssec. Surprise Ending is in good order to resume racing in the Brabazon Handicap. Bosky reappeared last week at Washdyke, finishing fifth, and he may be the improver in the Brabazon field.

Tamrin and Hush Money sprinted their six furlongs in Imin 19 4-ssec, and took 53sec for the last half-mile. They are not engaged until the Grand National meeting. Curtain Raiser (D. J. Thistoll) did well to be on terms with Adaris (K. R. Belsham) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 18 l-ssec, the last four in 52 4-ssec.

Curtain Raiser has shown promise, and may take beating in the first division of the Haldon Stakes.

Ngapunawai (C. T. Wilson) was too good for Margundi (B. J. Langford) over six furlongs. He finished five lengths clear and recorded Imin 21 2-ssec. the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec Peony Royal (H. W. Hibberd) and Abbot’s Choice (J. Didham) ended six furlongs on terms in Imin 19 2-ssec. They recorded 51 l-ssec for the last half-mile, and appeared to do their work well.

Peony Royal will take beating in the Brabazon Handicap if she recaptures her best form. Royal Warrant (A. J. Williams) was

shading Persian Gulf (J. C. Hobbs), Mazuma (A. Darling) and Weewyn (N. Bonney) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 l-ssec. They slackened their pace in the straight, and » took 53 3-ssec for the last half-mile. * Denominate (E. G. Low) beat his stablemate Pack Drill (A. J. Stokes) home from the six furlongs by a neck. He ran the distance in Imin 20 l-ssec, and the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec. Pack Drill should make a bold fresh start in the Camla Hack Handicap on Saturday. t King’s Fair Fit [ King’s Fair (C. McDonald) attracted ' attention to his fitness for the Braba- . zon Handicap when he beat Golden L Tan (B. J. Langford) by two lengths in their run from the six furlongs. . King’s Fair recorded Imin 19 3-ssec, 5 and ran his last half-mile in 50 4-ssec. It was an attractive trial for the . Brabazon Handicap by King’s Fair, the 5 early favourite for that race, r The Invercargill-trained Wayren (C. - T. Wilson) sprinted his six furlongs I in Imin 22 2-ssec, and the last half 5 mile in 53sec. I Super Find (N. Eastwood), with the • best of the weights, was shading Wake 1 Early (W. D. Skelton), and was clear of Magic Carpet (N. A. Dempsey) r after riyming six furlongs in Imin 21sec, the last four in 53 4-ssec. Magic Carpet is a sluggish track worker. . Cristatus (C. McDonald) and Trajan (T. Lyons), were companions over six ; furlongs, and recorded Imin 20 l-ssec, ; the last half-mile in 53 4-ssec. ’ Gold Mine (A. Balloch) ran his six furlongs in Imin 19 4-ssec, and ap- , peared to do his work well. He re- , corded 53 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Belle Nuit (K. R. Belsham) led her : stablemate Profane (J. Currie) by three-quarters of a length at the end of ? mile in Imin 48 3-ssec. They recorded 53 4-ssec for the last halfmile. Gone Away (D. X Thistoll) sped over his first half-mile in 51 l-ssec, and went on to complete a mile in Imin 47sec. The McDonough (R. D. Samson) was not hurried in running a mile in Imin 51 4-ssec. the last half-mile in 54 3-5 sec. Tarantella (L. Woodhouse) appeared to be doipg her work well ending seven furlongs in Imin 32 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 52sec. • Balveine (L. W. Hare) and Devalue (N. A. Dempsey) could have improved on their Imin 36sec for seven furlongs. The last half-mile took 52 3-ssec. Modern Times (C. T. Wilson) and Beaverbrook (A. Rickaby) were on terms a length clear of Colonel Hunt <3. S. Finlayson) ending seven furlongs in Imin 35sec, the last half-mile in 53 4-ssec. These members of C. C. McCarthy’s team are in splendid order for immediate engagements. Half-a-Crown in Front Half-a-Crown (N. Eastwood) was ' clear of Mish Mish (K. Nuttall), Leofa 1 (N. A. Dempsey), and Bahia Blanca ' (B. Lake) after running seven furlongs ; in Imin 32 4-ssec, the last half-mile in i 51 2-ssec. Half-a-Crown appeared to do his work very well. Russleigh (C. McDonald) and Mar- ( garet Leigh (D. Finnie) dashed home ’ from the five furlongs, and recorded the smart time of 50 3-ssec for the ’ last half-mile. They finished on terms. ’ Russleigh has thrived since she won ‘ at Trentham earlier this month. ] Mainlander (J. Hely) beat Black- i fellow (J. W. McDonald) and Peak ( Maru (G. Lee) home from the half- 1 mile by three-quarters of a length. He < ran the distance in 51 4-ssec. j

Assembly (J. W. McDonald), Overboard (J. Meikle), and Scuppered (K. Cotton) returned 50 2-ssec for their half-mile.

Cullen (D. F. Coombe) and Prosecutor (F. H. Skelton) were companions over half a mile in 53 3-ssec. Mighty Dollar (J. Didham) went away in the straight to beat Field Chief (R. J. Bain) *and Viewmaster (K. Nuttall) by 10 lengths in their half-mile sprint. Mighty Dollar recorded 5L2-ssec. Field Chief was not called on for anything like his best speed. Desperado (E. G. Low) ended his work by sprinting half a mile in 51 4-5 sec. He could have improved on that time without much trouble.

Tulagi (C. McDonald) and Lady Defaulter (D. F. Coombe) sprinted their half-mile in 51 l-ssec, and finished on terms.

f Worked Well Mohican (R. J. Bain), an attractive Blenheim-trained Gilpin colt, was on terms with Topical Cim (R. Blair) after running half a mile in 52 l-ssec. Both appeared to do their work well. The Wake (R. D. Samson) had Brooke (K. R. Belsham) for a companion over half a mile. They ended the trial on terms in 51sec. The Boss (J. Didham) sprinted half a mile in 52 4-ssec, time equalled soon after by G. J. Barton’s pair. Nuclear (E. G. Low) and Wait a Bit (A. I. Powell). Alb (A. J.’ Stokes) beat Manresa (J. W. McDonald) by half a length over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Kaffir (T. Griffiths) ’ and Treasure House (L. Woodhouse) followed in 53 3-ssec. Brutus (A. I. Powell) and Red Tinge (D. Dawson) ended half a mile on terms in 51 2-ssec. They did their work keenly.
