Racing For Rugby Visitors
Racing enthusiasts among the hundreds of Southland Rugby supporters coming to Christchurch for the Ranfurly Shield match on August 14 will be able to see at least five and possibly six races on the third day of the Grand National meeting at Riccarton. The special trains arriving from Invercargill on the Saturday morning will stop at Sockburn, and the Canterbury Jockey Club has arranged to provide free transport from the station to the course. The first of the special trains is expected to arrive at Sockburn at 9.10 a.m, The first race will start at 10.30. The club has arranged with its caterers to have refreshments available at the course on the arrival of the buses from Sockburn. Buses will be available to take spectators from the racecourse to Lancaster Park in time for the start of the game in the afternoon.
