IDAHO TO RACE AT RICCARTON

LARGE TRENTHAM TEAM COMING SOUTH “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, July 20. Idaho, one of the best three-year-olds of the pregpnt season, will resume racing on August 10 in the Selwyn Handicap on the second day of the Grand National meeting at Riccarton. His main mission during the spring will be the New Zealand Cup. Idaho has progressed exceptionally well since he last raced, but he has not travelled faster.thafi three-quarter pace, and he will require racing to bring him to his best. Trentham stables will be represented by a larger team than usual at the Grand National fixture. In addition to Idaho, J. K. Searle will take Red Star, Wally French, and Manoeuvre, and W. J. Bromby will he represented by Gunpowder and Mainlander, which will travel south on Friday. W. G. and R. W. Hawthorne have most of their team entered, but it has not been decided vfrhich members win make the trip. Gunpowder 'Forward) showed that he had recovered from the injury he sustained in the Hariri Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase on the opening day of the Wellington meeting, when he schooled over six fences of the Wellington Steeplechase course this morning. He had little pace on early, but did not look like making a mistake. His jumping improved as the school progressed, and he cleared the two final obstacles brilliantly. Gunpowder is a natural jumper, and should not be troubled by the Riccarton country. He will be ridden by K. Nuttall. Mainlander (Forward) schooled over four hurdles in the middle of the course. He made extravagant leaps at the first two, but took the others in his stride. He has not looked back since he last raced, and all he requires to give a good account of himself at Riccarton is reasonably firm footing. He will contest the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, the Winter Cup on the first day of the C.J.C. meeting, and then the Grand National Hurdles. He will be ridden by T. S. Carbin in his flat engagements, and by J. H. Hely in the hurdles. Red Star has lightened up a little as a result of his two races at the Wellington meeting, but ' ? has time to build up again before competing at Riccarton. He is at an awkward place in the handicaps for a small horse, and the larger fields he will have to contend with at Riccarton will make his task more difficult. Wally French in Form There were only two gallops on the two-year-old track, which was soft, this morning. Wally French (Barber) was doing much better than Manoeuvre (Searle) throughout five furlongs in Imin 7sec, the last four in 53sec, and the final three in 39 2-ssec. Wally French has done well lately, and this gallop showed that he is not far from his best. In the past, (he has shown his best form on top of the ground, but he was not inconvenienced by the conditions this morning. He will resume racing at the Manawatu Hunt meeting on Saturday. Usually, he comes to hand quickly, and he should be at his best for the winter Cup on the first day of the Canterbury meeting. Manoeuvre has not been harmed by his butings at Trentham, but he will have to be taken on trust in the Kennels Hack Steeplechase at Awapuni on Saturday, as he has run off in his three latest appearances. Devastator (Wilkins) covered half a mile in 54 3-ssec, the final three furlongs in 41 2-ssec. Devastator found the opposition too strong in his only outing at Trentham, when he was badly drawn at the hairier. He may do better in the weaker class in the Hautere Hack Handicap at the Manawatu Hunt meeting this week. The Someo-Golden Tide colt, which was formerly in W. J. Bromby’s stable, and won the first heat of the rising two-year-old parade at Trentham, last week, has joined W. D. Young’s Hastings team. He is raced by Mr M. and Mrs Dentice, who have Dormant in the same stable. Riding engagements at the Manawatu Hunt meeting include:—K. Nuttall: Wally French, Foghorn, High Street. T. S. Carbin: Kalonzo. J. Walker: Manoeuvre. J. Garth: Devastator.

Started at Waimate Tired Hands, which was 10, 9 in the order of favouritism, was omitted from the list of horses which also started, in the results printed yesterday of the Studholme Hack and Hunters’ Hurdle Handicap at the Waimate meeting.
