PRESBYTERIAN MAORI SYNOD
ORDINATION IN UREWERA COUNTRY (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 20. The Rev. Wi Tu Wiremu was ordained in the little Presbyterian Church at Te Whaiti, in the heart of the Urewera country, on Sunday. He is the first Maori minister to be ordained by the Presbyterian Maori Synod, which has had the power to ordain only for a year. This power was given as part of the Church’s policy of giving its Maori members a greater say in Church affairs. The Moderator of the Maori Synod (Mr Te Teira) presided at the ordination, which was carried out by the Rev. Kihoro Te Puawhe. Mr Wiremu is from Nuhaka,
Hawke’s Bay, and is a member of the Ngati Kahungunu tribe. He was an elder of the church for several years before taking the special course for elders conducted at Whakatane and designed to attract more Maoris into the Presbyterian ministry. Mr Wiremu will work in the Te Whaiti district.
