SCHOOL LUNCH-HOUR PERIODS
CHANGE AUTHORISED IN WET WEATHER (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. An amendment to the 1951 Educational School Attendance Regulations provides for the shortening of school lunch periods in wet weather and the closing of schools correspondingly earlier in the afternoon. Previously head teachers were permitted to cut out the lunch hour and close the school at 1 o’clock or soon afterwards—a practice which sometimes proved unsatisfactory because parents were not home when the child arrived home. The practice will not be introduced in any school without the school committee’s consent. The decision on the day rests with the headmaster.
