TRAINING RUN BY HALBERG
; Daly Recovers From Sickness . [From the Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent t with the team] ’ (Rec. 10 p.m.) VANCOUVER, July 19. r Murray Halberg, New Zealand’s > “hope” for the British Empire Games mile title, had his first training run on the University of British Columbia track near the Empire Games Village ► this afternoon. ; Halberg joined other New Zealand i distance runners in a jog over several miles around the cinder track. He i wore soft-soled shoes. The university track has been de- ‘ scribed by athletes of world experience as harder than most cinder tracks, - but not as hard as the White City track in London and the big oval in ' Berlin. Halberg, in blue shorts and a white singlet, jogged quietly around the [ track beside Jim Daly, of Canterbury, ’ who was unrecognised by many of ’ the spectators. Daly, whose training i was interrupted by sickness, looks bett ter now than he has since the first . of the team arrived, and he stayed with Halberg throughout the run. Soon after Halberg left the stadium, Australia’s John Landy arrived for his evening training, which he took at a very easy pace today. Landy trained in specially-made red and white running shoes with spikes set in rubber soles. He brought them with him from Europe.
