MAYOR’S HONORARIUM

Sir, —The extremely weak and ambiguous reply by Mr McCombs to your correspondent “Pro Bono Publico” should be referred to Mr J. Mathison, M.P., who very recently assured and reassured radio listeners that a polititician’s job was a full-time job. Who is right—Mr McCombs or Mr Mathison? Mr McCombs might supply the answer. The increased salary to £lOOO

per annum, half of which is tax-free, is now a full-time salary; and the public are entitled to expect our Mayor, whoever he may be, to apply himself fully to the city’s interests. To mention only one instance, what a poor show has been put up by our Mayor regarding Harewood compared with Wellington’s Mayor in his push Cor Ohakea. The very nature of the dual position makes it physically impossible of satisfactory performance. The interests in Wellington predominate and conflict with the duties which Christchurch has a right to expect for £lOOO a year.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. July 20, 1954.
