WARSHIPS CLASH OFF CHINA
Claim .By Nationalist Newspaper (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) HONG KONG, July 17. Two Nationalist Chinese warships seriously damaged a Chinese Communist gunboat in a 40-minute clash with a Communist nine-ship flotilla off the Fukien province coast on July 15, the Nationalist “United Daily News” reported. The newspaper said the Nationalist warships were returning home after the completion of a certain “important” mission when they sighted a Communist flotilla near the National-ist-held Matsu Island, off the northern Fukien coast, and opening fire scored a direct hit on the flotilla leader, which broke away from the formation in heavy smoke. The newspaper claimed the rest of the flotilla then “fled” westward towards the Min river mouth. Both Nationalist warships returned to base “safely without damage.” the newspaper said.
