JET FIGHTERS FOR JAPAN
“ FIRST SQUADRON NEXT SPRING ” (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 17. The first Japanese squadron of jet fighters was expected to be in the air next spring, and. the second by the following autumn, a “New York Times” correspondent reported today. The correspondent, writing from Tokyo, said it was understood the Japanese were negotiating with the United States for 25 FB6 Sabre-jets. The planes, presumably, would be lent to Japan. The correspondent said, that since Japan had been “grounded” from 1945 almost until the signing of thfe Peace Treaty on September s, 1951, probably no Japanese pilot had yet flown a military jet. Fliers of the first squadron, however, were reported to have been drawn from amon£ men with combat experience in the Imperial Air Force during the Pacific War. A group of 35 was understood to be undergoing preliminary training for jet operations at Matsushima base.
