New Seal Approved By Queen
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 15. The Queen, at Buckingham Palace today, formally defaced King George Vi’s Great Seal of Scotland, the emblem of his sovereignty, and approved a new one bearing her own coat of arms. The old seal is in theory destroyed at the end of each reign. But in practice the Sovereign merely gives it a gentle tap with a hammerknown as “damasking”—and hands it over to the Lord Chancellor. The new seal, the Great Seal of Scotland, is in silver 6in in diameter and Jin thick. It shows on one side the Queen crowned and throned, wearing her robes of State, and holding the Sceptre and Orb. The reverse side bears the Scottish Royal arms and the motto of the Order of the Thistle: “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit” (Touch Me Who Dare).
