JAPANESE UNION ELECTION
MODERATES SUFFER DEFEAT (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) - TOKYO, July 15. The moderate faction of Japan’s most powerful Labour organisation suffered defeat with the re-election as Secretary-General of a man considered representative of the extreme Left Wingers. The fifth annual convention of the Sohyoo (the General Council of Japanese Trade Unions) decided , that Mr Minoru Takano should remain sec-retary-general by 140 votes to 107. A challenger was Mr Kaoru Ota, chairman of the National Federation of Synthetic Workers’ Unions. Mr Takano has been accused by some rank and file members of the Sohyoo of being a “fellow traveller.” Mr Ota represents the “Third Force” Camp, and advocates a policy of neutrality in the East-West struggle. Mr Takano is known to be a strong advocate of political action, while Mr Ota is believed to feel that the Sohyoo should concentrate its efforts on the industiral front.
