AUREOLE WINS RICH RACE AT ASCOT QUEEN NOW LEADING OWNER FOR SEASON (NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 pm.) LONDON, July 17. Queen Elizabeth’s gallant four-year-old colt, Aureole, registered one of the most popular victories in British Turf historytoday when he swept to victory in the valuable King George sVI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, Berkshire. Aureole, runner-up in this race last year, turned back a strong continental challenge, beating Madame Suzy vol Terra’s French-trained Vamos by three quarters of a length, with Sir Percy Loraine’s Darius, the 2000 Guineas winner, third, two lengths further away, in a field of 17. The distance of the race was one mile and a half, and the winner’s time was 2min 44sec. It was the second richest stake ever run for in Britain. Aureole’s success makes the colt the biggest stake-earner ever to carry Royal colours. The £23,500 prize today made the Queen the leading owner of the season, with a total of £36,000. A thunderous ovation greeted the Royal win. The cheers were renewed when the Queen went down to the winner’s enclosure. Aureole, the pre-race favourite, kept his market position and started at 9 to 2 Vamos, a five-year-old which mussed" the Gold Cup at Ascot last month, because of a slight injury, was a 100 to 7 chance, and Darius was 20 to 1.
